Joshs Gifted Program Testing

Joshua has kindergarten graduation this week! Can't believe he is 6! Josh is very intelligent and above average so we tested him for the Extended Learning Program (elp) in the Salt Lake school district and the Magnet program in the Granite school district. They are pretty much the same thing just different names for different districts. SL district is sending out letters at end of May. We received Granites letter, he has been excepted and did excellent! He took 4 test the first test DIBELS he took the test one grade level higher and he scored 116 and the average for a FIRST grader is 50! The second test he scored 23rd highest score out of 104 kids, it was his lowest scoring test. He took it 3 months before the other tests and it was a non-verbal test. The lady said his score for that doesn't really mean anything, she says it is the first time these kids see a test like that and it is possible he felt rushed or confused or just had a bad testing day. She said he took the same type of test with more questions later and got 99%! So sounds like the first was a bad testing day. Then the 4th test he took he scored 98% which put him for that test the 2nd highest score out of 104 kids. So of all the gifted children taking the tests he scored overall 5th highest scores. She said if he would have scored to where he actual is at on the second test he would actually be the second highest score over all!! I asked her what things she would suggest I work with him on this summer, she told be "nothing" he is excelling, so letting have fun and play and explore any other interests he may have!! Good to know that all this computer, Nintendo 64, and Wii play isn't hurting him intellectually. I can actually see it expanding his thinking and coordination. As well as makes him want to draw more, lots of pictures of Mario levels. So we haven't decided where he will be going to school, there are a lot of things to factor in. In the SL district they have an ELP class that also teaches Spanish and right now I am having a hard time kicking that idea. We will see where the road takes us, for now I am just getting older as I see my 6 year old boy get ready to (as they say in Incredibles) find a new way to celebrate mediocrity (kindergarten graduation)!!!
